After a day’s work, I try to catch the last northbound rides of the Metro Rail Transit to get home and sometimes, I would drop by SM supermarket just minutes before its closing. Last Wednesday, I rushed to the supermarket to buy a sandwich spread, condensed milk and some garbage bags to be used in an experiment. I felt an awkward sadness that Christmas carols were already being played.
While I was at the milk rack, my beautiful next door neighbor saw me and said, “Oh, Kuya! Ikaw pala. Masarap ‘to, ilalagay sa Graham crackers tapos papalamigin sa ref…” The television advertisement was playing in my mind as she held a can of Nestle cream.
I nodded and smiled at her, and courteously excused myself. She smiled back and went on with her cheerful shopping. She might have already nicknamed me Interruptus for the several times that she had broken her intimate embraces with her boyfriend while at the terrace when I arrived late at night and passed by them.
When I got to the apartment, I was behind my second door neighbor who yelled to her boyfriend “Hello sweetheart” as she entered their unit. I passed by the third door where the lady I saw at the supermarket resides, her boardmates who are also a couple are having their dinner.
When I reached my pad, I opened the door and called out, “Honey, I’m home!” Just like in the movies…
After I put the sandwich spread and condensed milk in the refrigerator, I hurriedly jumped to bed, kicking my shoes off and snuggled under the sheets…
In a modulated voice, I ordered “House, aircon ON. 16 degrees Celsius. 5 hours.”
